Recession help from the “Godfather of Gore”

I have good news and bad news.

The bad news is some experts are saying that the economy is booming, and a recession is “impossible”.

Why’s that bad?

Because it’s like the part in a horror movie when some idiot says “There’s nothing out there, you’re probably just imagining things.” You just KNOW something awful is about to happen.

Plus...

Even if we do technically avoid a recession in 2024, it won’t mean much if consumer spending continues to plunge downwards, and your pet business is slowly suffocated to death.

But don’t worry - because I have some good news too:

I’ve found something that can help you and your business weather any storm.

It’s from a little-known copywriting book called “Sales Letters That Sizzle” by Herschell Gordon Lewis. (Lewis was one of the most respected and highest paid copywriters of his day, but he’s better known as the “Godfather of Gore”... Because by using the funds from his day job, he also made some groundbreaking horror films.)

Lewis’s handy book lists out 100 strong ways to begin a direct mail letter. Many of which can be adapted to writing strong emails, too.

For example:

On page 123, he says one of the most potent ways to start a letter is with the “good news, bad news” opening. It’s an irresistible attention grabber to tell someone you have both good news and bad news for them.

They want to know what it is!

And it’s easy to then talk about your reader’s problems (bad news), and use that to set up the introduction of your solution (good news).

So if you use that email opener - alongside the 99 others in the Gory Godfather’s book - I dare say you will have nothing to worry about in 2024. Because you will stand out like a sore bum amongst the flood of terrible and hype-driven emails clagging up your readers’ inboxes.
