Low open rates, and not sure why?

Something I’ve found that pet business owners often struggle with is making their email marketing work for them. And usually, their biggest hurdle is getting attention with their emails – with some pet ecomm brands having rock-bottom open rates in the region of 10% or so.

But why does this happen?

Why are your emails being ignored?

Well, let me give you an analogy:

Imagine that you get lost at sea, and you’re trying desperately to stay afloat. You’ve been alone for hours, the waves are crashing over your head, and you’re starting to wonder if you’re going to make it or not.

But then – hope surges in your heart.

A small boat spots you and pulls up alongside. And the man is leaning out of the boat, hand extending towards you…

And he pours a bottle of water into your mouth, making you splutter. Then he drives off, his job done, leaving you alone again.

Would you be grateful to this man, for making sure you’re not dehydrated? Probably not.

And here’s the point:

Your audience does not exist in a vacuum. Every single day, they’re being subjected to hundreds (if not thousands) of marketing messages from other businesses. In their email inbox, in magazines, on billboards, during TV breaks, and on and on. They are drowning in a sea of ads, they’re sick of it, and they certainly don’t want to subject themselves to more – in the same way that a drowning man doesn't want more water.

That’s why, when your email arrives and they see yet another obvious pitch, most will instantly tune you out. They will not give you a fair hearing.

(And no, it doesn’t matter how amazing your offer is. Substitute the bottle of water in the story above for a bottle of champagne, and you’ll see why.)

What’s the solution?

“Disguising” your pitch so that your audience not only opens your emails... but actually enjoys reading them.
