A holiday gift to keep you safe from being eaten

In Iceland, kids take Christmas a little more seriously than most. Because while they believe in Santa and so on, they also believe in something called “Jólakötturinn”.

What is Jólakötturinn?

He’s the demonic “Yule Cat” – black as night, the size of a house, and with teeth the size of kitchen knives – who loves to hunt down little children. And the only thing that can keep you safe from him, is if you wear some clothing that you got as a gift that year.

That means the stakes of being on Santa’s naughty list are much higher:

Not only will you get coal for Christmas… but you also don’t get any clothes. Which means the Yule Cat will eat you.

Sadly, I can’t send you any clothes to keep you safe from Jólakötturinn this year. That grim task is up to your friends and family.
