Three (non-sexual) uses for email
Y’know, email hasn't changed much over the last 30 years.
Sure, some of its uses haven't withstood the test of time…
Like how some people used email to flirt and send sexual messages to each other. (That was back in the ancient times of the early 2000s, before instant messaging apps blew up.)
But as a marketing tool?
Email is still going strong.
In fact, it’s better than strong - studies show it's still by far the biggest driver of online sales on the whole 'net.
Yes, even more than social media.
Which makes it funny that social media is so hyped up, while email is almost forgotten and taken for granted…
But why is email so much better for selling?
I did a little thinking, and came up with 3 reasons for you:
1. Email can feel personal, even when it’s not
On social media, you’re constantly being reminded that what you’re reading is a “mass broadcast”. There’s likes, there’s comments from other people, and so on. Not so with email. Do it right (i.e. write text-based emails with little-to-no pictures), and to your reader it can feel like your mass-marketing email was written just for them.
2. You can automate your entire sales funnel with autoresponders.
That means you can carefully control every single email a new subscriber sees, and in what order. Very powerful for selling. With social media, they'll only ever see whatever your latest public posts are.
3. You own your email list.
And (as long as you're backing it up regularly like you should) you can't be deplatformed. But if you built your entire following on Instagram and they suddenly ban you for no good reason? Too bad. You've gotta start over again from zero.
Of course, all that said… Email marketing is not a “magic pill”.
Especially these days, with the economy rapidly going titz up.
You’re competing with (on average) 121 other emails that are arriving in your subscriber’s inbox every single day.
Which means you won't sell anything if you don’t know how to get your reader’s attention, and how to convert that reader into a buyer.
