Best sex I’ve ever had
Marla Boasts To Her Pals About Donald: ‘Best Sex I’ve Ever Had’
That was the New York Post’s headline on February 16th, 1990. And next to the headline was a well-chosen picture of Donald Trump looking incredibly smug.
The Donald had just split from his wife Ivana and taken up with the 27-year-old actress Marla Maples. And with Trump being a firm fixture of New York culture at the time, the Post decided to run front-page stories about his personal life for a whole week.
Why?
Well, the tabloid’s circulation went up by 150,000 readers as a result. So that seems like 150,000 pretty good reasons why.
Now, I don’t usually follow the news. It’s mostly dark, depressing, and totally out of my control. Especially these days, with the economy slowly circling the drain - it’s like injecting yourself with a big shot of misery for no good reason.
However, I have recently started paying attention to tabloid newspapers like the New York Post.
And that’s because - unlike more dignified newspapers which have loyal readerships - tabloids live and die by how attention-grabbing their headlines are. So if you also want to sell more stuff by email, then it’s well worth studying them to figure out how they do it.
And what I’ve found is that there’s a handful of topics that tabloids love to cover, and that people apparently can’t get enough of.
What kinda topics do I mean?
Stories about celebrities… murder… drama… tragedies… secrets… and much more.
In total, I’ve found 39 broad categories.
But sex - like in the Trump headline above - is one of the biggest attention-grabbers. Pretty much everyone is interested in it. And while it might seem like a “cheap” or “sleazy” topic, there’s no denying it works.
Here’s what Col Allan, former Editor-in-Chief of the New York Post, said about his headline tactics:
“Clearly, our first responsibility is to inform. But as important, we must engage our reader - or we lose the reader.”
And in email, the same goes for me and you. While we obviously want to inform our readers, we also want to keep them engaged - or risk losing them. Maybe forever.
I’m not saying you have to start explicitly talking about sex in your pet business’s emails. In fact, that’s probably not a good idea. But if you can ever open your email with a story that's related to sex - or any of the other common tabloid topics - then you’ll prob’ly see a lot more people reading and engaging with them.
They are, quite simply, what people want to read.
